Myanmar is the
largest country in the
south-east Asia Peninsula
sharing borders with Bangladesh,
India, China, Laos and Thailand
in clock-wise. With a total land
area of about 676,000 sq. km, it
is about the size of Texas and
the size of United Kingdom and
France combined. The Country
stretches over 2090 km from
North to South and over 925 km
from east to west. It has a 2832
km coastline on the Indian
Ocean. More than half of the
total land area is covered with
forests.

Yangon, the
capital city is the main gate
way to Myanmar. The city was
founded by King Alaungpaya on
the site of a small village
called Dagon when he conquered
lower Myanmar in 1755. The name
Yangon means "End of strife"
which was anglicized to Rangoon.
The present day Yangon covers
over 350sq. km and has
population of over 5 million.

Mandalay, the

commercial centre with rail,

to all parts of the country.

Even Bagan
located in the unpromising arid
region of central Myanmar, it
was the centre of a great first
Myanmar Kingdom and a glorious
civilization, which flourished
11th to 13th Centuries. It is
now the main tourist attraction
in Myanmar and is one of the
richest archaeological sites in
Asia, containing over 2000 well
preserved ancient Pagodas and
temples. It is also noted for
its Lacquer ware industry.
